First in Pediatrics in Connecticut


Yale Pediatrics and Yale-New Haven Children's Hosptial - the First and Only Place for Children in Connecticut and in the U.S.

• One of the first pediatric hosptials in the country to have instituted a rapid
      response team to reduce the numbers of cardiorespiratory arrests in
      pediatrics, 2004.
• First pediatric emergency department, dedicated solely to care of children-only
      Connecticut Level-I Trauma Center for Children.
• Only ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) in Connecticut
      (life support for respiratory failure).
• Only pediatric sleep center in Connecticut.
• First NICU/Newborn Special Care Unit.
• World's first fetal cardiovascular center, 1984.
• New England's first in vitro baby, 1982.
• One of the first to routinely test newborns for Sickle Cell Disease, 1972.
• One of the first to perform open heart surgery on children, 1950s.
• One of the first cystic fibrosis clinics, 1950s.
• First in natural childbirth with "rooming in of baby and mother", 1940s.
• First regional children's heart/cardiology center, 1940s.
