Emergency Medicine

Emergency Medicine pediatricians provide comprehensive emergency services for about 30,400 infants and children annually brought to the Emergency Department of Yale-New Haven Children's Hospital for:

  • Management of fever in infants
  • Respiratory Ailments
  • Poisoning, including environmental toxins
  • Major and Minor Trauma, including Head Injury
  • Suspected Child Abuse (Forensic Medicine)
  • Abdominal Emergencies
  • Psychiatric Emergiencies, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Other acute illness and conditions

Our children's emergency department is the only pediatric level 1 trauma center in the statde of Connecticut. We work collaboratively with pediatric specialists, including surgical subspecialists, to bring the best emergency care to infants and children. We also work to improve our service with newer technology in diagnosis and treatment. We promote Emergency Preparedness in the Community and study International Child Health. Our faculty participate in advisory boards and initiatives in emergency medicine locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally.

Section faculty and staff teach medical students, physician associates, and residents and fellows in Pediatrics, Medicine - Pediatrics, and Adult Emergency Medicine. We offer Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) courses, and a three-year fellowship in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
